Nothing can spoil a great day skiing quicker than the pain of an ill-fitting ski boot. All skiers have been there, wincing as you quickly reach to unbuckle everything and let those puppies breathe! And we all know that we will never have the much-bragged-about comfort of a snowboard boot. But have no fear, Matt Sheets is here! Well, he’s at Teton Village Sports and he’s now taking appointments to give Jackson Hole skiers their best chance at better turns and happier feet this winter. Call 307-733-2181 now to set up an appointment, your feet will thank you in advance.
If you’ve been in Jackson Hole long enough, you may know him as “Professor Fit” or “Jackson Sole” – the former names of his bootfitting businesses at Wildernest Sports (now closed). He doesn’t have an official, catchy name these days but “The Boot Doctor” would not be a stretch. With over 30 years of experience, he’s written countless ski boot prescriptions, helping his clients choose the best boots for their feet and enhancing them with his proven method for molding custom footbeds.
Sheets attended Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat where he earned a degree in marketing with a focus on the ski industry. He taught bootfitting classes there for 3 years and he even wrote the curriculum for the “Advanced Bootfitting” course. Matt went on to become a certified pedorthist at OSU Okmulgee before returning to Jackson Hole to continue his career, giving local and visiting skiers alike the comfort and stability they desire in a ski boot.
Matt’s proven method starts with a full diagnosis of a customer’s foot type – anything from width, arch length and height, ankle and heel positioning, skier type and much more. He looks for problem areas caused by injury or strain and makes adjustments to accommodate and support them. The whole process takes about an hour and appointments are recommended (call 307-733-2181).
Matt uses a variety of techniques for the ideal fitting boot. Aside from heat molding your boot liners and using professional equipment to mold the exact shape of your feet, his attention to detail can be seen throughout the whole process, even behind closed doors as he makes custom adjustments by shaving the footbeds down by hand.
The boot wall is now full with boots from Lange, Salomon, La Sportiva, Rossignol and Technica. Meet with Matt or other friendly and knowledgeable members of the TVS staff to find the boots that are right for you.
