Last week at this time 10 of us were running in the Tetons with Eric Orton. The three day run academy based in Teton Village was challenging, fun, inspiring, beautiful and basically the best three days of running I have ever experienced.
Coach Eric Orton kept the group focused with his “E-isms”, short and memorable sayings to help remind you what you need to do on the trail. My favorite is still “more isn’t better, better is better”. That saying, and so much of what Eric coaches translates into all aspects of your life, which is why this camp left all of us inspired to be better, and appreciate what we’ve accomplished and what we can achieve with practice, patience and determination.
We worked on a variety of skills, and did a lot of drills to basically make us more efficient runners, so we can become more athletic and aware on the trail and ultimately build endurance and speed. It sounds technical – but Eric keeps everything simple and repetitious so that by the last day, proper form and focus is coming more naturally – another E-ism, we were “training the brain”.
Did I mention that camp was fun?
We learned from each other on the trails each day, and in the evenings we would laugh and re-count the day’s adventures. The final day, the group ran into Rock Springs Bowl – and back up the top of Rendezvous Mountain, it was the biggest run of the week, and we all finished happy, exhausted, and full of new potential – thanks Eric – I’ll be back next year!
