July is a fantastic time to hit the trails in the Tetons, with stunning views for miles beneath bluebird skies and an abundance of species of wildflowers blossoming across the mountains. On July 15 & 16, over 300 competitors descended upon Jackson Hole Mountain Resort to compete in the Teton Mountain Runs trail races, organized in conjunction with Bozeman Running Company. Competitors put on an impressive show navigating our network of trails while participating in their choice of three races of varying distance: 15K, 30K, and 50K. Click below to view full results!

Bozeman Running Company and our event staff orchestrated a top-notch event, creating an ideal racecourse with minimal route overlap. Friendly volunteer staff provided stoke and support to all competitors. We chatted with John Bowers, a local competitor who ran the 30K, to get his first-hand take of this incredible event.

NB: How was the course and the event overall?

JB: The 30K was organized really well. Starting out, the first 5-6 miles were all on the lower part of the mountain and we didn't gain more than 1,800 vertical feet. It was really nice to have some warm up mileage before making our way up steeper sections of the mountain. Then, Holey Moley just hits you in the face with vert! That trail is a beast and you're going straight up its steep pitch. There was a slight reprieve on the upper Wildflower Trail, and then it was up the Cirque Trail to the summit, passing by Corbet's Couloir and the tram overhead. Once I reached the summit, my legs felt like cement bricks, which made descending back to the base a challenge. Overall, the course design was amazing, the only time I overlapped where I'd previously ran was on Holey Moley. The coolest part of the course was that it took me from the base to the summit and the north boundary of the Resort to the south boundary, so I felt like I really covered the entire mountain.

NB: Describe the event in 3 words.

JB: Taxing, unique, rewarding.

NB: What was the overall vibe of the event and race?

JB: The vibe was excellent! Bozeman Running Company had an incredible MC getting everyone hyped before the race. Every volunteer at the aid stations around the course were totally psyched to be there and provided a high level of service to the runners. Waffles at the summit aid station was a really nice touch.

NB: Have you ever done this race before?

JB: Nope, never ran a 30K before. This was my longest race ever.

NB: What was your favorite part of the 30K?

JB: The Cirque Trail. It winds up beneath Headwall from the top of the Bridger Gondola, through Tensleep Bowl, past Corbet's Couloir with the tram soaring overhead, and culminates at the summit. That section of trail was so fun and the views to the east were incredible. It was a big challenge, but I was rewarded with reaching the summit and that felt super good.

NB: What was the hardest part of the race?

JB: Definitely running downhill from the summit to the top of Cheyenne Bowl. That's where I lost most of my time and it was the most physically taxing portion. I went from essentially boot packing up the Cirque Trail to running down the mountain road. Legs were on fire!

NB: How much training did you do for this?

JB: I signed up the week before, but I'm very active in my free time with mountain biking and running, so I came into it feeling pretty confident. Usually I'm running about 3 times a week of varying distances to keep my fitness level up. If I actually trained for Teton Mountain Runs, I'm confident I could level up to the 50K next summer.

NB: Why should someone compete in this race next summer?

JB: The race is very unique to Jackson Hole, and JHMR and Bozeman Running Company put on a really well-done event. If you’re a casual trail runner, challenging yourself with a race like this is a perfect summer season goal. It's not a super competitive atmosphere, it's not too easy, and it's not an intimidating race. I'd definitely encourage anyone to sign up, since there are varying options for length if they're feeling more or less confident.

NB: Thanks, John! Congratulations on finishing in the top 30 out of over 150 competitors.
