Day 1 Community Race Results

The Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club (JHSC) has been hosting one of the few (if not the last) open, non-sanctioned community downhill races since 1982. For the first 37 years of the Downhill’s life it was held at Snow King Mountain, and was known as the “Town Downhill.”  Although the Town Downhill was a beloved event with Jackson Hole locals and visitors, it needed new energy in order to continue supporting the JHSC’s mission as a major fundraiser.

In 2019 the JHSC approached JHMR about the possibility of moving the Downhill to Teton Village. Both Snow King and JHMR approved and so went a major redesign turning the former Town Downhill into the Jackson Hole Downhill.  The new Jackson Hole Downhill continues to be open to anyone with a need for speed. Community racers can register for up to three categories, including Pro, Am, Junior, Snowboard, Telemark, and of course “Fat & Baggy” where racers’ clothes must flap in the wind and their skis must be at least 86mm underfoot. Costumes are highly encouraged in the Fat & Baggy division!

As part of the redesign, the Downhill went from a two-day event to three days. In addition to the traditional community race the JHSC added a high-stakes team race featuring current and former World Cuppers and other invited pros.  Each team is led by a “Champion” who works with the JHSC to build their dream roster. Teams will be racing for the Campbell Cup, a newly added award for 2021 in honor of long-time JHSC supporter and board member, Bill Campbell.  Each team must fill the following positions:

  • One VIP racer (the invited Pro)
  • One Junior racer (U14-U19)
  • One Masters racer (50+)
  • Two Wildcard spots
  • Each team must also have at least one female racer

In addition to the high-powered, high-caliber race, the Jackson Hole Downhill will one day also feature apres and evening parties where our VIPs, Champions, community racers, and the public join together to celebrate the sport and community of alpine racing in Jackson Hole and beyond. For now, we will celebrate by focusing on the racing.

On March 12, 2020 with less than 24 hours until the first racers in the new Jackson Hole Downhill were set to run, the event was canceled due to Covid-19. Within days JHMR was closed for the season, all remaining events in Jackson Hole were canceled, and life changed dramatically for our world.

A year later, the JHSC has been safely hosting junior and community races with strict Covid guidelines in place.  Although the celebrations are on hold for the 2021 Jackson Hole Downhill, the event will host over 170 racers ranging in age from 12 to 84 years old March 12-14. Men and women racers will compete for equal cash and prizes on the renowned Crags-to-Moran racecourse off of Teton Lift.

The 2021 list of invited VIP racers includes Daron Rahlves, Wiley Maple, Dustin Cook, Abby Ghent, Keith Moffat, Anna Marno, Brennan Rubie, Florian Szwebel, and Alice Merryweather. Also featured will be Adam McCool.  Adam is a long-time sponsor of the Downhill with his business Jackson Hole Cycle & Saw and is the only person to have raced in every single Downhill since 1982!

Funds raised at the FCExcavation Jackson Hole Downhill directly support the JHSC’s 500 local kids. To learn more about the race and the Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club, visit jhskiclub.org. To go directly to the Downhill’s full weekend schedule, click HERE.
