This weekend a heavy blanket of snow draped the valley, temperatures dropped to record lows for October, and our snowmaking crews fired up the guns for the first time this fall. Jackson locals and the last bit of summer visitors woke up to what looked like mid-December conditions in the Tetons on Saturday morning. Snow-capped peaks and a valley coated in white fueled the excitement for opening day on November 26th.

Rendezvous Mountain with a coat of white in October

Following the burst of snow, a cold front arrived on Monday morning, reminding us of what winter really feels like in northwestern Wyoming. Temperatures dropped to -9 degrees Fahrenheit, the lowest ever recorded temperature in October as officially recorded at the Jackson Climate Station. Bust out the puffy jackets and boots, winter is on it’s way to Jackson Hole.

A cold north wind comes across the Tetons early Monday morning

This is the time of year when our snowmaking crews are paying the closest attention to the weekly forecast, and all week they watched the cold front moving toward Jackson while simultaneously preparing the snow guns for their first blast of the 2020-21 season. With a little help from mother nature the crews got to work on Saturday, coating several lower mountain trails leading up Teewinot and Apres Vous. Even though we are 29 days away from the first lifts spinning, it was a welcome sight to see Rendezvous Mountain covered in snow.

Winter 2020-21 is right around the corner and we are getting ready for another classic deep Jackson Hole season with added safety protocols to keep you, our guest, safe while skiing and riding. Pick up your lift ticket or book your Mountain Sports School lesson here and start JH Dreaming.
