UPDATE (Sunday, January 27, 4:45 PM): Today the competitors of the Jackson Hole IFSA Junior Freeride Competition took to the daunting Tower 3 to show the judges what they’re made of. Fifty-eight skiers and riders qualified from yesterdays run on Toilet Bowl into the final heat. The morning started off with overcast clouds and only a trace of snow from the night before. After a quick course inspection, the event started with the youngest age group taking to the intimidating slope.

Taking it into the gut of Tower 3!

Shaking out the jitters before the apron at the bottom.

As the morning progressed and athletes continued down Tower 3, the level of competition quickly escalated. It wasn’t long until the cliffs on the skiers left and right of the chute turned into the venue for a sending party. The intimidating hardpack at the bottom was no match for the field of talented skiers and riders.

Let the sending party begin.

Quick feet and spotting the landing were key today.

Bigger airs and more technical lines excited the crowds at the bottom during the last few heats of the day. Once the final competitor crossed the finishing gates, the chatter among the athletes was all about where the standing would fall. The judges made their way to the bottom to discuss their notes and make the final decisions of who would take home 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in each respected class. UPDATE (Saturday, January 26, 4:30 PM): Results are in from Day One of the IFSA Junior Freeride Competition.

RESULTS

One of the youngest competitors in the field isn’t scared of air!

This morning, January 26, is day one of the International Freeskiers and Snowboarders Association(IFSA) Junior Freeride Competition hosted here at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. They certainly chose a good weekend for the competition as we’ve received almost 5′ of snow in the past 10 days here in Northwest Wyoming, with another 7″ falling Friday as the riders and skiers inspected the course while dialing in their lines. We’ve got athletes from across the region including Jackson Hole, Teton Valley, Big Sky, Winter Park, Sun Valley, Bridger Bowl, Park City, and Mad River Glen (shout out to the east coast!). These athletes have descended upon Toilet Bowl to showcase their style and grit among the features, as judges watch below and determine the qualifiers for tomorrow. Sunday morning we’ll have the finals in Tower 3 Chute if conditions permit, with an awards banquet to follow in the Olympic Room of the Olympic Sports Plaza adjacent to Teton Mountain Lodge. The running order will be the same both days with the U12 females skiers kicking it off.

Competitors were not afraid to take to the air!

Freeriders are scored based on line choice, fluidity, technique, control, and style as they navigate through natural terrain featuring trees, steeps, cliffs, chutes, drops, and gullies where they are rewarded for using the features creatively. Judges for this weekends competition will be Johnny Manwarring, Ryan Cruze, Matt Lancaster. Each of whom has spent time on the competition circuit growing up and continue their pursuits in the mountains. Safe to say, they’re worth judges!

Remember, this event isn’t possible without the help of Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club, JHMR Ski Patrol, and JHMR Race Crew – so if you see these hard workers on the hill give ’em a high five! With that being said, come on out and join us Sunday off Amphitheater run as DJ Era plays fresh beats, Jeff Moran keeps you in the know, and you may even learn a trick or two from these youngsters! Spectators are welcome and we hope you enjoy your weekend on the hill! Good luck to all the competitors.

We’ll be updating this blog with results from both days, so stay posted for those.

Girls just want to have fun!
