Jan. 20-26 - Dr. Huckinstuff's weekly recap:

Tickles and teases tempted skiers through the week of January 20-26, as daily touchups and momentary deep turns kept skiers engaged in the uniquely pleasurable game of powder hide and seek. While fresh snowfall totals were unexpectedly slight, accompanying mild temperatures kept the sliding surfaces soft and gave dopamine deprived air fiends new opportunities to take flight. Some of the best atmospheric visuals of the year (so far) went down this week, as slow-moving, multi-level cloud layers sent snowshine and shadows refracting into deep, indescribable hues of indigo. All eyes turned to the Toilet Bowl last weekend as the IFSA Jr. Freeride Competition slid into town. Putting on a high-energy show for the public below, the next generation of shooting stars flashed fast lines despite the difficulties posed by stubborn cloud banks. It's amazing to watch the future progression of skiing take form as it's filtered through the imagination of youth. If you have never seen a junior freeskiing show, put it on your to-do short list. They're inspirational events that shouldn't be missed. Zooming out a bit, backcountry travel around the resort remained low this week with dangerous avalanche conditions persisting through the period. Looking ahead it seems we may see have a similar situation setting up this coming week. Daily dribs and drabs of snowfall look to be possible with more warm temperatures. While the big-powder storm system we all desire isn't in our immediate future, continued mild weather and the ticking of time should conspire to settle some backcountry concerns, and allow for cautious January exploratory turns.
