1/24/16 | Two Skiers Fatally Injured in Backcountry Adjacent to JHMR

(Teton Village, Wyo. January 24, 2016) - It is with regret that Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) reports two skiers were fatally injured in the Rock Spring Backcountry located south of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

At approximately 2:28 pm JHMR Ski Patrol received a call reporting an accident as result of an avalanche in Ralph's Side, in Rock Springs in between areas known as Zero G and M & M. The avalanche was skier triggered and reported to be 5 to 6 feet deep in depth at the crown. Ski Patrol immediately sent responders to the scene. One skier involved in the event indicated to Ski Patrol that two members of his party were missing. At approximately 3:14 pm one individual was located with a probe search, and extricated from the snow by 3:20 pm, at that time the individual was found to be unresponsive. A probe line with ski patrol and local volunteers initiated a search for the second skier, and the second individual was extracted at 3:32 pm, also found to be unresponsive. Both skiers were pronounced dead on the scene. None of the skiers in the party were found to be wearing avalanche transceivers.

"We are saddened to report these fatalities, and the staff at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort join me in expressing our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victims," commented Jerry Blann, President of JHMR.
