Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Reports
Highest Visitation on Record

(Teton Village, WY, April 9, 2013) – Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) is pleased to report that winter 2013 ended with the highest level of skier/rider visits in the resort’s history. The end of season total of approximately 502,222 visits surpasses the previous record set during the winter of 2008, a winter that saw significantly more in season snowfall as this winter.  The increase in skier visits of 5% over last year was achieved despite below average snowfall that was 60% of average at the base and 80% of normal at mid-mountain and only one inch above last season on the upper mountain.

“Grooming and snowmaking assisted Mother Nature this year for sure,” commented Jerry Blann, President of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.  In-season snowfall was approximately 100 inches below average.  “To achieve a record in a year like this is quite an accomplishment and a tribute to the hard work by all our employees,” added Blann.

This is also the first time JHMR has reached 500,000 skier visits.  Only 17 to 20 resorts a year go over the 500,000 mark.  “It is a good feeling to reach this benchmark that few resorts ever do,” continued Blann.  “Again it is a measure of all the hard work by our whole team,” he added.  “Furthermore, the Kemmerer Family has consistently invested in JHMR for the long term.”

Over the past 17 years the Kemmerer Family has invested an average of $8 million per year into improvements to the resort.  By comparison over this period, JHMR has averaged 2.3 times more capital spent per skier visit than Rocky Mountain resorts as a group.

Most recently nearly $6 million was spent improving intermediate skiing with the installation of the Casper high speed detachable lift and the associated trail work to create a better experience for intermediates.  “The new Casper area was a huge success, exceeding our expectations.  It was a strong commitment to the intermediate skier and rider and they responded very positively.”

The resort had record visitation in each of the following months; December, February and March.

“The community has become much more unified over the last several years.  There is great synergy between the Wyoming Office of Tourism, Jackson Hole Travel and Tourism Board, Chamber, JH Air, Central Reservations and the business community in general.  Working together makes Jackson Hole a much more attractive destination,” Blann stated.

JH Air increased the number flights and seats into Jackson this past winter.  Two new non-stop flights were added this past season from Newark, NJ and San Francisco, CA.  Non-stops from Minneapolis returned this year after a hiatus of several years.  Seat capacity in total increased 8.2%.

Guest service scores garnered over the winter by intercept surveys revealed a continued improvement in scores even with the increase in visitation.  “Our employees are taking service seriously and it is showing,” commented Blann.

One area the resort has made significant investment in is grooming and snowmaking.  Guests have shown their appreciation by giving snow conditions this year a 7.7 on a scale of 10.  You would need to go back to the incredible snow year of 2007/2008 (605” vs. 385” this year) to see a score that high.  The resort has increased its fleet of groomers over the last few years and plans to continue to invest in grooming this coming year and over the next few years.

The resort is currently finalizing plans for future improvements to the resort.  Details will be made public later this spring.

Looking ahead, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort will open the Tram for the summer season on Saturday, May 25th.  The new Jackson Hole Mountain Bike Park accessed by the Teewinot Chairlift is scheduled to open on June 15th, followed by the Bridger Gondola and the Couloir Restaurant on June 18th.  The Deck at the top of the Bridger Gondola will open on June 23rd.  For complete information on dining, events, and activities please visit www.jacksonhole.com.
