JACKSON HOLE MOUNTAIN RESORT'S COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is a founding member of the Climate Challenge! The Climate Challenge is an innovative sustainability program that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the ski industry due to the industry´s exposure to climate change. Jackson Hole is one of eight resorts nationally that has taken the challenge for the 2011/12 season. More information on the Climate Challenge
JHMR has long respected the natural beauty and ecological significance of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, demonstrated by its winning the National Ski Area Association’s Golden Eagle Award for Overall Environmental Excellence in 2011, Silver Eagle Award for Visual Impact in 2005, Silver Eagle Award for Energy Conservation in 2003, and Golden Eagle Award in 1995. This policy upholds JHMR’s commitment to conserving natural resources and mitigating climate change.
“JHMR will grow in harmony with its environment by developing and implementing a comprehensive environmental program. To implement this policy, JHMR commits to:
• Follow applicable environmental laws and regulations.
• Follow the principles of the NSAA Sustainable Slopes Charter.
• Continually improve its environmental program.
• Communicate its environmental work and policy to employees and the public
• Prevent the loss or diminishment of high conservation value areas
• Establish quantifiable targets for pollution prevention.”
JHMR has a number of resort-wide quantitative environmental targets to achieve 10% changes in resources use by 2015 (10 x 15). The quantitative goals are based on intensity measurements per guest visit from a 2009 baseline.
By 2015 JHMR will:
(1) Reduce by 10% its carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (from propane/natural gas, gasoline/diesel, and electricity consumption);
(2) Reduce by 10% its domestic water consumption;
(3) Increase by 10% its waste diversion to recycling and composting.
JHMR has achieved ISO 14001 registration of its environmental management system (EMS) for over five continuous years, since 2006. JHMR is one of two ski areas in the U.S. to achieve this recognition. The ISO 14001 EMS provides two major benefits of consistency (since all departments must develop annual goals that related to resort wide objectives), and honesty (since the system is annually evaluated against the international ISO 14001 standard by an accredited third party auditor).
Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is an authorized permittee of Grand Teton National Park and the Bridger-Teton National Forest, and is an equal opportunity employer.
