Backcountry Ski and Snowboard Camps
Jackson Hole backcountry ski camp

The Backcountry Guide service offers two different backcountry camps this year. They are both designed to teach aspiring backcountry travelers how to safely break away from in-bounds terrain and explore the areas beyond. Our guides are skilled at the art of guiding and teaching and will provide a safe, fun, and educational experience.

December 15-16, 2007
Employee Backcountry Camp

Camp cost: $200 without lift tickets

The camp will begin with the basics by teaching transceiver use and avalanche rescue. We will introduce and discuss avalanche hazard evaluation throughout the two days, building on each tour and days experience. You will be exposed to tests such as compression tap tests, shovel shear tests, and rutschblock tests. Route selection and safe travel practices will be emphasized and discussed throughout the duration of the camp. You will learn how to form a strategy for a specific descent, choose the right terrain, look for islands of safety, ski one at a time, and look out for everyone in the group. Travel techniques such as efficient skinning/tracksetting, bootpacking, and snowshoeing will be discussed. We will show you how to stay warm and dry in the winter environment. Finally, we will cover group dynamics and decision making in avalanche terrain. Lunch is included.

Focus on Alpine Touring

Camp cost: $675 including lift tickets; $550 without lift tickets

This camp will include a new component, a Backcountry Touring Clinic. This a three day clinic that is open to telemark skiers, snowboarders and alpine skiers. In this clinic instruction will focuses on avalanche awareness and touring safely and efficiently in the backcountry, plus an opportunity to explore the depths of Teton Pass. This clinic is designed to offer the building blocks necessary for personal discovery in your own backcountry.

Plan on physically challenging days with at least two tours per day. The format of these camps will be teaching, learning and practice, while we tour and make turns. People who are reasonably fit will enjoy the camp, but be prepared to be pushed. Registration is the night before the start of the camp from 4pm to 5pm. There will be a celebratory dinner the second night of the camp with a slide show by one of the guides.

We have compiled a list of recommended equipment to bring to the camp.
