Cleaning SuppliesUsing green cleaning products
• Three years ago, with impetus from an EPA grant, JHMR began using ‘green’ cleaning products. These products (called “The Natural” from Clean Environment, Inc. in Lincoln, NE) contain ingredients like sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sodium lauryl sulfate (from coconut and palm oil) and citric acid (from fermented corn), rather than phosphates, chlorine bleach and phenol disinfectants. The green cleaning products have reduced high levels of ammonia in our wastewater and the janitorial staff enjoys using the less toxic products.

Recycling snowmelt
• The new maintenance building has an extensive water recycling facility that filters snowmelt from the snowcats so the water can be reused for washing. Any wastewater overflow from the tanks is thoroughly filtered, tested, and treated by the sewage treatment plant. Over 7,000 gallons of water have been recycled for snowcat washing with the new filter.
