Waste Reduction & Recycling

In 2005 JHMR recycled 113 tons of consumer and workplace materials.

Goal: By 2011 increase recycling volumes by 10% or more.

JHMR recycles the following consumer products:
Aluminium cans,
#1, #2 (beverage containers only)
#5, #7 with #2 plastics
Green, blue, clear and brown glass
Tin or Steel cans
Newspaper
Mixed office paper
Cardboard, wood and miscellaneous metal

JHMR recycles the following workplace products:

Fluorescent bulbs
• JHMR now collects all of its fluorescent bulbs and sends them to Jackson Community Recycling where they are processed with a ‘bulb eater’ which crushes the glass and separates out the mercury.

Computers
• JHMR is sending its computers to Guaranteed Recycling Xperts in Denver which processes the computers on-site rather than sending them on to Asia where toxic parts can be carelessly discarded when the computers are disassembled. The in-country disassembling costs almost four times (about $40 per computer) as much as out-of-the-country disassembling and recycling, but is worth it for the integrity of the process.

Snowmelt
• The new maintenance building has an extensive water recycling facility that filters snowmelt from the snowcats so the water can be reused for washing. Any wastewater overflow from the tanks is thoroughly filtered, tested, and treated by the sewage treatment plant. Over 7,000 gallons of water have been recycled for snowcat washing with the new filter.

Office products
• JHMR assembled a catalog for all of our purchasers that lists only recycled versions of Corporate Express products we commonly use, such as paper, envelopes and binders.

Recycled Paper• For our printed products, such as trail maps and brochures, we now request that all of our printers give quotes for the product using non-chlorine bleached paper with post-consumer content. We are also replacing all of our toilet paper, paper towels, tissues and napkins with at least 15% post-consumer waste, unbleached paper products.

Reducing toxins in maintenance shop
• In the shop, we will continue to replace drum top parts cleaners which use naptha solvents with aqueous parts washers which use water and detergent, and replace most of our aerosol cans with Sure Shot refillable canisters. This has already been done in our main shop and now we are working on our tram building.

Replacing oil paints
• JHMR will test water-based paints this spring to see if they can replace our oil-based paints. Latex paints only contain water, pigment and an emulsion resin and can be disposed in the trash if kitty litter or clay is added to absorb the paint. Oil-based paints, however, contain mineral spirits (naphtha), toluene, xylene and other petroleum distillate solvents, so must be disposed of as hazardous wastes.
