Energy Conservation


In 2005 JHMR averted almost 15% of our total carbon emissions through wind power, biodiesel, carpooling/bus travel and recycling progr ams.
1. Committed to 100% Green Energy
• We have committed to purchasing renewable energy credits that will offset 100% of our energy usage commencing June 1, 2007. Until then, JHMR will be offsetting 50% of energy usage with renewable energy.
JHMR is one of the largest energy users in Jackson Hole and will be offsetting approximately nine million kwh per annum with this program. The renewable energy product purchased from Renewable Choice Energy, is made up of a combination of Wind, Biomass, Small Hydro and Geothermal energy.
This three year commitment will reduce CO2 emissions by 37,584,000 Pounds:

Taking: 3822 cars off the road
Planting 5282 acres of fully mature trees
2. Reducing Dependancy on Cars
Teton Village is located 10 miles from Jackson, the main community base in the valley
•For nearly a decade, JHMR has purchased START bus passes for all employees.
• Winter 2002/03 we extended the program to all season pass holders at no cost to them.
• Carpoolers (3 or more) can get the $5 parking fee waived in the Ranch Lot in Teton Village.
• 2006 JHMR was certified "Best Workplace for Commuters". As part of this certification we have established the Emergency Ride Home program. The goal of the Emergency Ride Home Program (ERHP) is to provide a safety net for employees who carpool or take alternative means of transportation to work in the Village. Workers qualify for the program if they did not personally drive to work the day of a personal or family emergency.
In 2005 JHMR spent $85,000 on 2000 bus passes for all our employees and adult season passholders (kids ride free). We also spent over $1m to develop a Park and Ride lot between the town of Jackson and the resort base area. Total Miles traveled per skier visit (determined by parking lot counts) dropped by 30%, resulting in savings of over 2000 tons of CO2 emissions, more than all other conservation projects combined.
3. Four-stroke snowmobiles
• We have purchased 10 four-stroke snowmobiles from Ski Doo for winter operations. We intend to keep changing our fleet over to 4 stroke at a minimum of two machines a year or when we need to replace old machines.
5. Alternative fuels
• Since July 2005 Jackson Hole Mountain Resort utilizes biodiesel in its complete fleet of 11 off road, heavy equipment vehicles. The Resort uses B20 fuel which is a blend of approximately 80% diesel and 20% biodiesel. Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources. It contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. Biodiesel is better for the environment because it is made from renewable resources and has lower emissions compared to petroleum diesel.
6. Trees for travel - to date this program has planted more than 6500 trees
JHMR raises money through the sale of unique lanyards and donates these proceeds to American Forests. American Forests commits to planting trees (10 per $10) which absorb carbon dioxide over their lifetimes. Our donations serve a dual purpose: absorbing carbon dioxide from travel and bringing back whitebark pine, a species endangered by white pine blister rust and fire suppression in the region.

7. Lighting retrofits
• JHMR is replacing over 1,000 light bulbs in its buildings at a cost of almost $16,000. Compact florescent bulbs will be installed which can produce light with one-quarter of the energy of incandescent bulbs. Also, JHMR will replace its inefficient magnetic florescent ballasts with electronic ballasts.
8. Building energy audit and remodeling
• JHMR will retrofit its on-mountain dining establishment, Casper Restaurant in the future. This will include replacing older windows, installing efficient lighting, automating and timing the heating, lighting and ventilation, and reducing drafts by installing vestibules in downstairs doorways.
