Our favorite local restauranteur, gourmand, and general food guru Gavin Fine and his team, along with Chef Wes Hamilton’s crew, are headed to New York in a couple days and are getting ready to cook it up at the James Beard House with a little bit of their own eating on the side, of course.

We asked the expert foodie for his top NYC picks for eating out as when he and his gang are not honored to be cooking at the James Beard House next Thursday you may find Fine and the boys at any of the following:


Gavin’s Top New York Picks

Best Bistros:  

Raoul’s – best steak frites in the city, old school bistro in Soho

Balthazar – larger scale brasserie bistro

Pastis – for Sunday brunch



Lupa Osteria Romana – Mario Batali restaurant in the West Village; a  classic, Roman


dell’anima – great wine bar and Italian food with a fantastic wine program

Charlie Bird – New West Village run by the former chef of The Little Nell in Aspen

L’Apicio – a delicious, modern twist on Italian



Pok Pok – James Beard chef from Portland (Andy Ricker)’s restaurant with some of

the best Thai in the country



Dinosaur Bar-B-Que – great Harlem, downhome place


Upscale Big Meal:    

Daniel – iconic Daniel Boulud

Le Bernardin – best seafood in the country

Batard – haven’t been yet, but it’s supposed to be fantastic


Favorite Small Spot:

Bar Jamon – similar to Bin22 with stand up tapas, great wines, cheese, meats;

located on a hidden side street


Favorite Place to Grab a Crafted Cocktail:

Employees Only – started the NYC cocktail craze back in the day, they are serious about their drinks


Favorite Family Friendly Spot:

Brooklyn Flea Market – over 150 food stands with foods from all over, vintage, antique


Favorite Place for a Drink: Gramercy Tavern


Favorite Organic:

Roberta’s – all organic, everything is from their garden, super simple, wood burning oven, steak, chicken
