1% for the Planet Welcomes Jackson Hole Mountain Resort ‘Couloir’ and ‘Deck’ Restaurants to Network

June 26, 2012 – Waitsfield, VT – 1% for the Planet, a global network of businesses that invests at least 1% of its sales in organizations focused on sustainability, is pleased to welcome two outstanding new members into the 1% family; the award-winning ‘Couloir’ Restaurant and the stunning “Deck” Restaurant, both Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR) properties.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have Jackson Hole Mountain Resort join 1% for the Planet with their signature restaurants Couloir and The Deck,” said 1% CEO, Terry Kellogg. “Membership in 1% for the Planet will move the resort’s sustainability agenda forward in a highly visible and tangible way. We sincerely hope that JHMR’s example will inspire many more organizations within the ski industry and beyond to follow suit.”

“Operating in the heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of the most pristine natural environments in the world, is a privilege that comes with great responsibility,” said Jerry Blann, President, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. “We have invested strategically and labored intently to be the best possible stewards of our natural resources within our operating systems to date. The resorts ISO 14001 registered Environmental Management System has produced five years of impressive results and our commitment to environmental protection has resulted in two Golden Eagle Awards (the highest honor of environmental achievement in the ski industry). Joining 1% for the Planet is an investment outside our company and we are excited about this prospect from an educational and impact potential.” Blann added.

Couloir and the Deck re-open for the summer this week and large portion of the support from the restaurants will initially be allocated to Vertical Harvest, one of the most innovative architectural-agricultural-sustainability projects in the country: a state of-the-art, three-story, 13,500-square-foot hydroponic farm that will employ workers with developmental disabilities year-round, set for construction in Jackson Hole in 2013.

 


Couloir Restaurant is JHMR’s well known and most unique dining experience committed to a rigorous sustainability policy. Giving back as a 1% member compliments the restaurant’s eco-friendly best practices of guaranteeing the majority of its ingredients come from a 250-mile radius, menus designed seasonally to reduce carbon footprint and extensive use of local farmer’s markets and ranches. Couloir’s awards include the Conde Nast Hot List in its opening season and more recently a coveted award from Wine Spectator Magazine. The Deck is a summer only alfresco dining experience over looking Grand Teton National Park and the surrounding mountains.

In just over 10 years, 1% for the Planet has grown to more than 1,500 members in 48 countries. The 1% global network supports 3,000 non-profit partners with over $100 million in cumulative giving since 2002.
