10th Annual Safety Week at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort

(Teton Village , WY . January 15, 2009) – The week of January 17-23 will mark the 10th Annual National Safety Awareness Week held by Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) at JHMR.  This year, NSAA is highlighting the “Objects are closer than They Appear” campaign to emphasize the first point of the Responsibility Code and the importance of staying in control on the slopes.

Safety Week activities are centered on the seven points of the Skier’s and Snowboarder’s Responsibility Code, which are key elements of safe skiing and riding. The tenets of the code include:

  1. Always stay in control.
  2. People ahead of you have the right of way.
  3. Stop in a safe place for you and others
  4. Whenever starting downhill or merging, look uphill and yield.
  5. Use devices to help prevent runaway equipment.
  6. Observe signs and warning, and keep off closed trails.
  7. Know how to use the lifts safely.

The on-mountain “Safety Posse” will be on the slopes all week to promote snow safety with free prizes for skiers and boarders who follow the elements of the Responsibility Code. In the parks, the Park and Pipe Crew will be demonstrating “Smart Style” and awarding prizes to those who follow it. Additionally, guests will have a chance to meet the JHMR Avalanche Rescue Dogs daily from 1pm-2pm at the top of Bridger Gondola.

In support of Safety Week, JH Sports and Hole in the Wall Snowboard Shop will offer 20% discounts all week long on helmets and backcountry safety equipment, such as transceivers, shovels, probes and backpacks.  Also, children renting ski or snowboard equipment will receive a free helmet rental with their package.

A children’s safety poster contest will be held throughout the week.  Entry forms may be picked up at the JHMR front desk in the Pepi Stiegler building. The final judging will be on January 26 with prizes for the top three contestants.

The festivities will commence January 23 with “Safety Thirst” après specials at Nick Wilson’s from 3pm-5pm . This event will include a raffle for a backpack full of backcountry gear.

As NSAA President Michael Berry commented, "safety remains a top priority throughout the season for ski resorts, and Safety Week is an opportunity for both guests and employees to gain a better understanding of the importance of personal responsibility on the slopes.”
